About the book

The Book

The Playbook Behind Cults, Frauds and Cover-Ups and the Whistleblowers Who Exposed Them. By Jamie Murray. Published by Thunder Rebel Publishing.

What it is about

You report a problem and are told nobody else has ever had it.

The evidence that could prove you right stays with the people you are complaining about. Every question becomes a sign that you are the problem. The people you turn to for help end up looking into you. A deal is offered if you will stop speaking up. And anyone who raises the same concern is written off as piling on.

Maybe it happened at work. Maybe at a church, a clinic, a university, a government office, a team, or a community you love. Maybe it was a message from someone online who seemed to be on your side. The setting changes. The pattern does not.

This book calls the people who run that pattern wolves: bad actors who hide behind the groups we trust most and use that trust to conceal harm. Some are companies, governments, armies, or religious leaders. Some are cult founders, doctors, con artists, or online predators. They come from the left and from the right. What they share is a playbook. They infiltrate by appearing helpful. They consolidate by placing allies and creating dependencies. They turn the group’s defenses against its critics, escalate when the lie needs more cover, and entrench until removing them seems impossible. Chapter 1 walks through each stage.

The book follows those wolves through cults, frauds and cover-ups, and follows the people who stopped them: a former gymnast who confronted her abuser in court, a city clerk who found a bank account she had never seen, a reporter who mapped an army of fake accounts, and British post office operators who took on the Post Office itself.

Who it is for

Readers aged 16 to 35, and the teachers, parents and HR, compliance and ethics staff who reach them.

The framework

The playbook

Wolves rarely break into the fold. They are usually invited in. Across finance, faith, sports, medicine and government, the cases in this book follow the same five stages:

Infiltration

Enter appearing helpful, even heroic.

Consolidation

Place allies and create dependencies.

Weaponization

Turn the institution’s defenses against critics.

Escalation

Increasingly extreme actions to maintain the lie.

Entrenchment

Become too essential to remove.

The Shield and the Sword

The Shield and the Sword (Chapter 2) are the two tools wolves reach for once someone raises an alarm. The shield turns loyalty into armor: question the beloved coach, the famous company or the trusted church, and you seem to be attacking everyone who belongs to it. The sword turns that same loyalty against the person who spoke up, who suddenly becomes the problem: a liar, a traitor, someone out for money.

The Fortress Paradox

The Fortress Paradox (Chapter 7) is the same pattern at the scale of a whole people. A group that survived real persecution builds defenses, such as solidarity, vigilance and a rule against airing its problems in front of outsiders. Those defenses save lives. But they can stay up long after the danger has passed, and wolves inside the group learn to hide behind them, so that criticizing what they do sounds like an attack on the group’s survival.

Your First 24 Hours

The Conclusion turns it all into a plan for what to do in the first 24 hours after you see something wrong: write it down, find your others, get advice, and verify before you accuse. The checklist →

The counter-playbook

The counter-playbook (Chapter 10) is how ordinary people win anyway. They keep the record, find one another, take the fight somewhere the wolves don’t control, get the story out as widely as they can, and keep going until the win is locked into a law, a ruling or a settlement.

The record

answers Infiltration

the stage where the wolf gets in looking helpful. A disguise falls apart when the institution’s own paper trail shows what is behind it.

The group

answers Consolidation

the stage where the wolf places allies and makes others depend on it. The wolves build a network of allies; the people they harm build one of their own.

The forum

answers Weaponization

the stage where the institution turns its defenses on its critics. The fight moves into a place the institution does not control, such as a court, a legislature or a public inquiry, where the wolves no longer make the rules. Getting there takes lawyers, and lawyers take money.

The megaphone

answers Escalation

the stage of ever more extreme steps to protect the lie. Independent journalists carry the story to the public, and the more outlets carry it, the harder it is to kill.

The long haul

answers Entrenchment

the stage where the wolf becomes too essential to remove. Wolves count on the outrage fading, so the win has to be locked into a law, a ruling or a settlement that outlasts the headlines.

How the book was made

Wolves Among Us is a sourced synthesis of court records, sworn testimony, public inquiries and published journalism. It is not original investigative reporting. Every factual claim is tied to a source in the notes, and the full notes, with every web address, are on this site.

The book was written with an AI writing assistant, working from hundreds of sources that were researched and checked one by one. Jamie Murray is not a professional journalist. Charges are reported as accusations, acquittals and appeals are reported alongside the original result, and where a person or company denied a claim, the book gives their answer.

Some cases are marked “as of October 2026”: those lines were true on that date. Case Updates will track what has happened since.
